Twisted Handrail Illustration

Iron work responds to architectural style in a way that no other material can. Whether your home is Palladian or country vernacular, the metals express and define your look. Ironwork provides more openness than a code-built wood railing, due to the higher strength of the materials. The inherent structural support of the metals meets the 200 psi lateral deflection criteria for railings. Well-built ironwork outlasts wood as an heirloom element of your home.

Top Job Award Library Rail
This stunning classic of robust forgework shows a masterful command of iron at the anvil, with hot splits drifted through overscale tapered pickets, and a traditional mortise and tenon hot connection. A thin band of brass adds a subtle glint of gold below the mahogany cap railing. Fascia mounted corbels with hidden connections.

Top Job Award Silicone Bronze Cast Rail
Computer modeling made possible the fine details in the mold for this gothic quatrefoil with center buttoned collars. The doubled railings creates a delicate shadowbox effect which balanced the massiveness of the oversize newel posts and top rails. Patination darkened the bronze to show off the highlights and shadows.

Grace Notes in Long-Line Fencing
With a sweeping view above steep drop-offs, we wanted to keep the panorama open with simple clean lines. A forged ovoid element at the lower third creates a subtle horizontal line of mass, breaking up the vertical lines. A collared radius arch below the cap rail softens the long fence line. Forged stylized botanical corner panels were placed at choice sightlines to provide a visual sense of structure.

Floating Top Rail and Tapered Pickets
Classic, hand-tapered pickets give a clean-lined railing a tailored look. The double handrail and the rail bottom horizontal float on a flattened ovoid, making this design a great choice for ironwork that is seen from below. The arched diamonds also provide breathing space to the mostly vertical design.

Wrapped Pickets Rail
Nail heads, or “upsets”, as the blacksmith refers to them, form a detail of mass above the crisp horizontal wraps that tie this railing together. Unconventional design, and unconventionally fitting addition to a house built by an early Disney designer.
